Grain, iron ore, coal and pig iron dominate the cargo crossing Pivdennyi — formerly Yuzhny — on Ukraine's Black Sea coast, alongside liquids such as petroleum products, oils, chemicals, liquid ammonia and methanol. Listed under UN/LOCODE UA YZE and lying about 30 km east of Odesa, it is Ukraine's largest deepwater port by turnover. Nineteen berths along roughly 5 km of quay and a draft of up to 18.5 m let it handle Capesize and Panamax vessels. In 2020 the port moved around 61.66 million tonnes, some 39% of the national seaport total. Rail and pipeline links connect it to Ukraine's agricultural and industrial heartland. Since Russia's full-scale invasion, operations have been repeatedly disrupted; in August 2026 Russian forces reported striking multiple vessels at Pivdennyi. In June 2026, MSC acquired a 51% controlling stake in the TIS container terminal, the port's only private container berth. Also in August 2026, Ferrexpo suspended pellet exports from Pivdennyi after a drone strike disabled port facilities. Shippers should continuously monitor security conditions, routing and insurance premiums. Chornomorsk and Odesa, and outside Ukraine the Romanian port of Constanța, serve as fallback options.
