More naval base than commercial harbour, Yokosuka Ko on Tokyo Bay in Kanagawa Prefecture hosts both a US Navy base and a Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force base, yet also handles real freight. Proximity to the Nissan Oppama plant makes it an important automobile-shipping port, so ro-ro dominates the commercial traffic, alongside rice, grain, gravel and sand. The port handles around 28 million tonnes of cargo a year and sees roughly 550 foreign-trade vessel calls. A passenger berth receives cruise ships, while the Tokyo-Wan ferry links Yokosuka to Kanaya in Futtsu, Chiba, in about 40 minutes. Yokosuka runs no significant container liner service. For containerised shipments on Tokyo Bay, neighbouring Yokohama and Tokyo are the decisive alternatives.
