Fishing boats and seasonal car ferries, rather than container cranes, set the tone at Gytheio (also Yithion or Githion), the small main port of the Mani peninsula in the south-eastern Peloponnese. Seasonal ferry links run to the island of Kythira and at times on to Crete, operated among others by Seajets, while a sizeable fishing fleet works out of the same basin. The port is not built for containers, heavy-lift or international breakbulk: the cargo quay offers only about 7.9 m of depth and the approach channel roughly 3.4 m, suiting small vessels alone. Road connections lead inland toward Sparti and Kalamata. Forwarders with commercial sea freight for the southern Peloponnese rely on Kalamata, and on Piraeus for containerised cargo.
