Known historically as Newchwang, Yingkou opened to foreign trade in the 19th century and has since grown into one of the largest ports in northeastern China. Today it operates as two distinct areas: the shallow old port at the mouth of the Daliao River, roughly 5 m deep and the subject of this record, and the modern deepwater port of Bayuquan on Liaodong Bay. Bayuquan's container terminal handles fifth- and sixth-generation vessels and offers extensive yard and storage space; overall the port moved about 5.65 million TEU in 2020, placing it among China's top nine for boxes. Cargoes are varied, spanning containers, steel, grain, timber, coal, ore, LPG and chemical fertilisers. As the principal sea outlet for the industrial Northeast, Yingkou is tied into the interior by rail and road across Liaoning and beyond. Full Chinese customs facilities support import and export flows. For higher frequencies or additional deep-sea services, shippers can turn to Dalian or Tianjin.
