Yantian's annual throughput topped 15 million TEU for the first time in 2024, ranking it among the world's largest container terminals run by a single operator. In eastern Shenzhen, the terminal spreads across some 373 hectares on the South China Sea with 16 deep-water berths, about eight kilometres of quay and a 17.4-metre approach channel. It is operated by Hutchison Ports together with the Shenzhen Yantian Port Group and built squarely for boxes, regularly receiving the world's biggest container ships of over 24,000 TEU. Yantian mainly serves Pearl River Delta manufacturing bound for the United States and Europe. Anchorage and channel depths of 14 to more than 21 metres allow mega-carriers to call largely independent of the tide. Rail and road connect the hinterland, including a scheduled rail-sea service linking Chongqing via Shenzhen. Customs clearance and cross-border e-commerce services are well established. For added Delta capacity, Shekou and Chiwan in Shenzhen, Hong Kong and Nansha at Guangzhou serve as alternatives.
