Run within Shandong Port Group alongside Qingdao and Rizhao, Yantai on the Yellow Sea — historically Chefoo — is one of China's major cargo ports. In 2024 it handled over 500 million tonnes of cargo and more than 5 million TEU, both record highs, up from 424 million tonnes and 4.63 million TEU in 2023. It has been the world's leading bauxite import gateway for 13 straight years, with ore moved across a fully automated terminal. Containers, breakbulk, oil and project cargo round out the mix, and its China–Africa breakbulk liner service topped 4 million tonnes for the first time in 2024, up 53.5 percent. Channel and berth depths of around 14 metres, with anchorage to 15.5 metres, accommodate large bulkers and container ships. Rail and road tie the port into Shandong's industrial hinterland, complemented by ferry links across the Bohai Sea to Dalian, and major ship-repair capability is available on site. For forwarders, Yantai is a full-service gateway for bulk, ore and containers, with Qingdao and Rizhao as alternatives in the same group.
