Part of the Kitakyushu industrial belt on Dokai Bay, Yahata (Yawata) is first and foremost a steelworks port tied to Nippon Steel's Kyushu Works. Its quays mainly move iron ore, coking coal and finished steel rather than liner containers, reflecting a dedicated industrial role. The location was chosen back in 1901 for its sea links to ore sources and its proximity to the coal of the Chikuho region. Cargo-pier depths of around 7.9 metres suit bulk carriers and steel-product vessels serving the plant. Road and rail tie the works into the wider Kitakyushu conurbation. For containerised freight, forwarders rely on the neighbouring Kitakyushu port areas of Tobata and Moji, as well as Hakata at Fukuoka.
