Once a key mineral-export point, Xeros on Morphou Bay no longer functions as a commercial cargo port. From the 1930s until 1974 the American-owned Cyprus Mines Corporation ran an ore-dressing plant and shiploader here, exporting copper concentrate and iron pyrites from the Skouriotissa mines. The end of mining exports in 1974 and the division of Cyprus left the site — now in the island's north, near Gemikonağı — largely dormant, with no regular international shipping and only an open roadstead offering about 1.8 metres alongside. Shippers with cargo for Cyprus use the working ports of Famagusta in the north or Limassol in the Republic-controlled south.
