Chemicals have shaped Wyandotte on Michigan's Detroit River since the late 1800s, when soda ash was first produced from the area's rich salt deposits; the firms later consolidated and were absorbed by BASF in 1969. Today the riverside site is an industrial works port rather than a container terminal, serving BASF plants that make urethanes, specialty plastics, polyols, catalysts and resins. Inbound vessels bring raw materials and chemical cargo along the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway, whose draught limits confine traffic to Seaway-size ships and lake freighters, with a winter-restricted season. Road and the Wyandotte Terminal Railroad link the plant to its hinterland.
