Serving the agricultural Fens of eastern England, Wisbech (GB WIS) is Cambridgeshire's only gateway to the sea, an inland river port roughly 8 km up the River Nene. It handles forestry products and timber, agricultural supplies, building materials and other dry and breakbulk cargo – nothing containerised. A regular fortnightly service from Riga brings Baltic timber, and the port has more recently added lightweight expanded-clay aggregate. Tidal access and a narrow channel cap vessel size, and coasters have on occasion grounded as the tide falls. No container-line, dangerous-goods or deep-sea services are confirmed here.
