Once a busy gypsum-shipping point on the Avon River, Windsor no longer functions as a commercial port at all. A flood-control causeway carrying Highway 101 and the railway across the river closed the town off from shipping in 1970, and the extreme Minas Basin tides had already limited vessels to docking and sailing within a three-hour window. There are no cargo terminals, container handling or customs operations here today. Freight in this part of Nova Scotia moves through the deep-water port of Halifax.
