Wilmington pairs a 42-foot (about 12.8 m) navigation channel with nine berths, some 2,060 metres of wharf, and a crane fleet of four post-Panamax and three neo-Panamax container cranes on North Carolina's Cape Fear River. Its container terminal has a capacity of around 600,000 TEU, with renovations set to roughly double that toward 1.2 million TEU. Cold chain is a strength: a refrigerated container yard with about 1,500 reefer plugs and on-port cold storage support perishable imports and exports. A separate general cargo terminal handles dry bulk, breakbulk, project and ro-ro cargo. Road and rail link the port to the North Carolina interior. For larger container volumes on the US Southeast coast, Charleston, Savannah and Norfolk are the stronger alternatives.
