Ranked the number-one port in North America for fresh fruit, Wilmington (US ILG) on the Delaware River handles around 215,000 TEU a year, much of it bananas, pineapples and juice concentrate. Operated since 2023 by Enstructure for the State of Delaware, the port is served by Dole and Chiquita reefer and container services from Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala. Its cold chain is the draw: the largest on-dock cold-storage complex in the United States, about 800,000 sq ft (some 74,000 m²), backed by more than 1,500 reefer plugs. Alongside containers and reefer cargo it handles breakbulk, project cargo, dry bulk and auto/ro-ro traffic. The Delaware River channel currently allows about 40 feet (12 m) of draft; the planned $635 million Edgemoor terminal would deepen this to 45 feet and roughly quadruple container capacity. Road and rail link the port to the Philadelphia–Delaware Valley hinterland. For larger container volumes, PhilaPort (Philadelphia), New York/New Jersey and Baltimore are the stronger alternatives.
