OneSteel, operating within the GFG/Liberty group, runs Whyalla (AU WYA) on South Australia's Spencer Gulf as a captive iron-ore and steel port rather than a container facility. Iron ore has shipped from here since 1903; since 2007 it leaves by transshipment, with barges feeding capesize bulk carriers at three deep-water anchorages, sustaining volumes of around 8–9 million tonnes a year and historically up to 12. The adjoining steelworks exports billet, rail, rod, bar and structural sections and imports raw materials for steelmaking in return. In February 2025 the South Australian government placed OneSteel into administration under emergency legislation, putting the port's future in the spotlight. No container line services, large-scale dangerous-goods handling or general liner trades are confirmed here. For containerised or general cargo, Port Adelaide's Outer Harbor is the practical alternative, with Port Lincoln serving grain.
