A cement plant at Cape Foulwind once made Westport one of the busier coastal loaders on New Zealand's South Island, until the works closed in 2016 and ended that trade. The port on the bar-restricted mouth of the Buller River now concentrates on exporting Buller coal from the Stockton field, alongside gypsum, breakbulk and fish. Draught depends on tide and the sand bar, typically around 5 metres, with maximum length on the order of 145 metres. The facility is run by Westport Harbour under Buller Holdings and handles no container line services or large international vessels. Shippers needing containerised or larger-vessel capacity should look to Port Nelson, Port Taranaki or Lyttelton.
