# Welland (CA WEL)

**UN/LOCODE:** CA WEL
**Country:** Canada
**Water Body:** Lake Erie; Great Lakes
**Harbor Size:** Small
**Harbor Type:** Canal or Lake
**GPS:** 43.0000, -79.2500

Welland sits on the canal that lets ships skirt Niagara Falls, yet the city itself loads almost no freight. Since the Welland By-Pass opened in 1973, commercial traffic — roughly 3,000 vessels and some 40 million tonnes a year between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario — runs east of town, while the old downtown cut became the recreational Welland Recreational Waterway. There is no container or general-cargo terminal at Welland; for forwarders it is a transit point rather than a port of call. Actual cargo handling on the corridor takes place at the grain and bulk berths of Port Colborne and at Port Weller, with Hamilton serving wider overseas volumes.
