Rio Tinto runs Weipa as one of the world's foremost bauxite loading ports, shipping more than 30 million tonnes of ore each year from Australia's Cape York Peninsula. Conveyors feed the Lorim Point East and West wharves and the newer Chith export facility at Amrun, where bulk carriers load directly for alumina refineries at home and abroad. This is a single-commodity bulk gateway — there are no container, breakbulk or RoRo services, and general cargo for the region is not handled here. The sparsely populated hinterland has minimal road connectivity, so the sea route is effectively the only supply chain in and out. Forwarders moving containers, reefer or project cargo should route via Cairns, Townsville or Brisbane instead. For dry-bulk charterers in the aluminium trade, however, Weipa remains an indispensable loading point with berths around 11 metres deep.
