On the tip of the Shandong Peninsula, facing the Yellow Sea, Weihai is one of China's closest ports to South Korea. A Ro-Pax ferry link to Incheon, run by the Chinese-Korean Weidong Ferry company since 1990, carries passengers, containers and increasingly trucked freight across the strait. The port has more than 30 berths, including deep-water berths able to take Panamax and larger vessels, served by gantry and mobile cranes. Alongside ferry and container traffic it handles dry bulk and general cargo. Road and rail connect the port to the industrial centres of the Shandong Peninsula. For high-volume container line services, the larger neighbouring ports of Qingdao and Yantai are the main alternatives, with Dalian across the gulf.
