On the tip of the Shandong Peninsula, facing the Yellow Sea, Weihai (CN WEG) is one of China's closest ports to South Korea, roughly 200 nautical miles from Incheon. The Ro-Pax link to Incheon, run by the Chinese-Korean Weidong Ferry company since 1990, currently offers three weekly sailings with the New Golden Bridge VII and carries passengers, containers, trailers and trucked freight; cross-border e-commerce between Shandong and Korea has grown quickly on this route. The port has more than 30 berths, including deep-water berths able to take Panamax vessels, served by gantry and mobile cranes, with container capacity given as about 1.2 million TEU a year and total throughput in the order of 45 million tonnes. Weihai Port now sits within Qingdao Port Group following the transfer of ownership, tying its feeder and liner network more closely to Qingdao. Alongside ferry and container traffic it handles dry bulk and general cargo, and customs procedures are well practised for Korea trades and e-commerce consignments. Road and rail connect the port to the industrial centres of the Shandong Peninsula. For high-volume container line services, the larger neighbouring ports of Qingdao and Yantai are the main alternatives, with Dalian across the Bohai Gulf.
