Weehawken's working waterfront belongs largely to the past. Until 1959 it hosted a busy West Shore Railroad rail-and-ferry terminal on the Hudson, and Seatrain later ran a container operation here; today the Port Imperial frontage opposite Midtown Manhattan is chiefly a passenger hub, served by NY Waterway ferries, the Hudson–Bergen Light Rail and buses alongside residential development. Commercial breakbulk, container or bulk handling has effectively ceased. International ocean freight for the New York metro area moves through the container terminals at Port Newark-Elizabeth in the Port of New York and New Jersey.
