Set on the west shore of Lake Michigan about midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, Waukegan Harbor is a shallow-draft Great Lakes port rather than a container gateway. Its commercial traffic has historically centred on dry bulk — gypsum, cement and aggregates — handled across a channel of roughly five metres. Today that commercial role is modest, with the basin given over largely to marinas, fishing and recreational craft and only occasional bulk calls. For regular container or breakbulk moves on the Lakes, forwarders look to the Port of Chicago, Indiana Harbor and Milwaukee.
