Namibian port authority Namport runs Walvis Bay (NA WVB) as the country's principal commercial seaport, and a record 253,996 TEU in 2024/25 confirmed its lead on the South Atlantic. Opened in 2019 on reclaimed land at a cost of about N$4.2 billion, the container terminal offers a 600-metre quay with 16 metres of water depth and capacity of roughly 750,000 TEU a year, alongside a tanker jetty and berths for breakbulk, fish, minerals and project cargo. Rail operator TransNamib and MSC aim to lift containerised rail volumes between the port and Windhoek to around 30,000 tonnes a month by 2028, shifting boxes off the road. Customs clearance and bonded transit are geared towards corridor traffic, making the port a practical entry point for cargo bound for central and southern Africa, often with shorter transit times to Europe than routings further south. Forwarders weighing options can consider Lüderitz for regional volumes or Durban and Cape Town where sailing frequencies are higher, but for Namibian imports and exports Walvis Bay remains the first choice.
