Coal and coke, mineral fertilisers, pellets, ore, steel, scrap and timber make up the cargo base at Vyborg, a multipurpose dry-bulk and breakbulk port on the Gulf of Vyborg in north-west Russia. With a channel depth of only about 6.4 metres, it does not function as a container port despite some listings to the contrary. Throughput was around 1.82 million tonnes in 2021, driven largely by a sharp rise in coal transhipment, with capacity reported above 2.5 million tonnes. Several multipurpose public berths operate year-round across the harbour. In 2024, however, Russia's western coal ports came under pressure as national port coal volumes fell about 10%, leaving smaller Baltic terminals such as Vyborg underused. Road and rail link the port to north-west Russia and transport corridors toward the EU border, while containerised or reefer cargo must route through other ports. For those flows, St Petersburg handles containers and general cargo, and the nearby bulk and oil ports of Vysotsk and Primorsk offer alternatives.
