Sheltered behind a narrow entrance, the Gulf of Kalloni on the west of Lesbos holds the shallow waters — roughly 5 to 20 metres — that yield the prized 'Kalloni sardines', a protected-origin catch landed by the tonne each day. The anchorage by the Kalloni islets serves the local fishing fleet, which also brings in cuttlefish, mullet and havara shellfish, the latter exported notably to Italy.
