Thessaly's industry — steel mills, cement works, fertiliser plants and farm exporters — ships through Volos (GR VOL), Greece's third-largest cargo port after Piraeus and Thessaloniki, with around 4.8 million tonnes handled in 2023. Dry and liquid bulk account for roughly 62% of that volume, general cargo including containers about 31%, and passengers the remaining 7%. The cement cluster around AGET Heracles (Holcim) alone exports some 850,000 tonnes of clinker and cement a year through the port. Operations are run by the Volos Port Authority (OLV SA), which sits in the portfolio of Greece's privatisation fund HRADF. Container volumes stay modest at around 20,000 boxes a year, essentially regional and feeder traffic, while ferries carry about 3.5 million passengers annually to the Sporades and seasonal Aegean routes. Road and rail reach the Thessalian plain around Larissa, and the EU is backing modernisation with roughly €45 million in Connecting Europe Facility grants through 2027. For scheduled container services Piraeus offers far more capacity, and Thessaloniki serves northern Greece.
