Third behind Piraeus and Thessaloniki, Volos ranks among Greece's largest cargo ports, set at the head of the Pagasetic Gulf on the eastern mainland. Dry and liquid bulk make up about 62% of throughput, general cargo including containers around 31%, and passengers the remaining 7%. The cargo base is industrial: steel and scrap metal, cement, fertilisers, petroleum products and agricultural goods, with a cement cluster around AGET Heracles (Holcim) exporting roughly 850,000 tonnes of clinker and cement a year. Run by the Volos Port Authority (OLV SA), the port handles modest container volumes of around 20,000 boxes a year, mainly regional and feeder traffic. Volos is also a busy ferry port, carrying about 3.5 million passengers a year to the Sporades and seasonal Aegean routes. Road and rail connect it to the Thessalian plain around Larissa, and the EU is backing modernisation with around €45 million in Connecting Europe Facility grants through 2027. For large container line services, Piraeus offers far greater capacity, while Thessaloniki covers northern Greece.
