Despite the word 'terminal' in its name, Vityaz is an offshore oil-loading complex rather than a port handling general cargo. Sited in the Sea of Okhotsk off north-eastern Sakhalin, it combined the Molikpaq platform, a single anchor leg mooring buoy and the floating storage and offloading vessel Okha to export crude from Russia's Sakhalin-2 project, which delivered first oil in 1999. Loading is confined to crude oil transferred directly to tankers at an open roadstead; there is no breakbulk handling, no container traffic and no conventional customs or hinterland function. After the TransSakhalin pipeline and the onshore Prigorodnoye terminal in Aniva Bay came on stream, year-round crude export shifted largely to the south of the island. For freight forwarders the site is therefore irrelevant to box or project cargo; the working references are the Prigorodnoye oil and LNG terminal (Sakhalin-2) and De-Kastri (Sakhalin-1) on the mainland coast. Supply movements for the offshore facilities run through the operators' dedicated base ports, not through this roadstead.
