A newly commissioned mechanised coal terminal and a deepened outer harbour now allow Capesize bulkers to work alongside at Visakhapatnam (IN NRP), the busiest state-run port on India's east coast. Throughput reached a record 91.17 million tonnes in financial year 2025/26, up 10.34 percent, out of roughly 915 million tonnes moved by India's Major Ports that year. Imports of coal, crude oil, fertiliser and iron ore accounted for 57.45 million tonnes (+5.5 percent), while exports of steel, engineering goods, chemicals and bulk commodities rose 19.4 percent to 33.67 million tonnes. Containers remain the smaller line of business: the terminal is rated at about 650,000 TEU a year and mainly serves feeder and regional services across the Bay of Bengal. A deep-draft oil tanker berth covers crude and refined products. Rail and road link the port to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the steel industry in Visakhapatnam itself, with rail carrying most ore and coal. As a federally administered Major Port, customs and foreign-trade procedures are well established for bulk and containerised cargo alike. Shippers needing deep-water bulk capacity use neighbouring Gangavaram, while Krishnapatnam and Chennai are the stronger container alternatives.
