On India's eastern seaboard, Visakhapatnam is the country's third-largest port by volume and the busiest on the Bay of Bengal coast. Its backbone is dry bulk: iron ore at around 25 million tonnes and coal at roughly 20 million tonnes together make up more than half of an annual throughput that reached 82.6 million tonnes in 2024/25. Rail and road connect the port to Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and the local steel industry, with rail carrying the bulk of ore and coal. As a designated Major Port, customs and foreign-trade procedures are well established for both bulk and containerised cargo. Shippers seeking deep-water bulk capacity often use neighbouring Gangavaram, while Krishnapatnam and Chennai serve as alternative container gateways.
