More than 640,000 lane metres of freight and over 1.4 million passengers a year pass through Visby, the supply gateway to the Swedish Baltic island of Gotland. The backbone is Destination Gotland's RoPax service from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn, moving trucks, accompanied and unaccompanied trailers and specialised loads on a roll-on roll-off basis. Cruise calls and the occasional conventional cargo ship for island supply round out the traffic. There is no scheduled container liner service here; the island's bulk cargo and cement move mainly through nearby Slite. As an island port, Visby has no road or rail hinterland of its own — the link to the mainland runs entirely over the ferry lines. For Gotland forwarders, Visby is therefore primarily a RoRo and trailer port rather than a general-cargo handling site.
