Ferry ramps and a vehicle marshalling yard, rather than cargo quays, define Virtsu, the mainland landing of the busy Virtsu–Kuivastu crossing in western Estonia. Operator TS Laevad runs the roughly half-hour link to Kuivastu on Muhu island with up to 30 sailings a day, and from there the Väinatamm causeway leads on to Saaremaa. For forwarders this means accompanied RoRo traffic above all: trucks drive aboard for the islands, but there is no conventional breakbulk, container or customs handling at Virtsu. Pier depths of about 5.5 m suit ferries, not sea-going freighters. Commercial sea cargo for Saaremaa tends to run through Roomassaare near Kuressaare, while containers and international loads clear via Tallinn/Muuga or Paldiski on the mainland.
