On St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs, Village Cove opens onto the ice-prone waters of the Bering Sea, roughly 1,300 km west of Anchorage. The open roadstead offers a breakwater, about 210 metres of dock space and a barge off-loading area, with a small-boat harbour added in 2011 for the halibut fleet. Cargo here is overwhelmingly fishing-driven: crab, halibut and pollock, with processors such as Unisea and Icicle operating near the harbour and up to nine offshore plants serviced from the island. Freight and supplies arrive by ship from Anchorage on a monthly to bimonthly cycle and from Seattle five or six times a year; scheduled container-line calls are not confirmed. For containerised or customs-cleared international freight, Dutch Harbor/Unalaska and Anchorage are the realistic gateways.
