Norsk Hydro routes most of its Brazilian alumina and aluminium output through Vila do Conde, the port serving the Albras smelter and Alunorte refinery at Barcarena in Pará. Sitting on the right bank of the Pará River some 55 kilometres from Belém, it ranks as the largest port in the state. Its roughly ten berths, with depths ranging from 12 to 23 metres, handle bauxite, coke, pitch, kaolin, fertiliser, timber, liquid bulk and general cargo rather than scheduled container lines. Bauxite mined at Paragominas and Trombetas is refined here into alumina and then smelted into primary aluminium for export. Hinterland links run by road across Pará and by barge along the Amazon and Pará river system. Forwarders moving containerised freight into northern Brazil should weigh Itaqui at São Luís or the terminals around Belém as alternatives.
