Norsk Hydro routes much of its Brazilian alumina and aluminium output through Vila do Conde (BR VDC), the port serving the Albras smelter and Alunorte refinery at Barcarena in Pará and run by the state operator Companhia Docas do Pará (CDP). Between January and October 2025 the port moved about 16.7 million tonnes, a slight 1.2 percent dip year on year but still the largest throughput of any port in northern Brazil. Sitting on the right bank of the Pará River some 55 kilometres from Belém, its roughly ten berths with depths of 12 to 23 metres handle bauxite, alumina, soybeans, caustic soda, fertiliser, coke, pitch, kaolin, timber, liquid bulk and general cargo rather than scheduled container lines. Bauxite mined at Paragominas and Trombetas is refined here into alumina and then smelted into primary aluminium for export, while grain arrives mainly by pusher barge along the Amazon waterway system. A concession programme running from 2025 into 2026 is leasing out several terminals, including VDC29 for vegetable dry bulk with up to seven million tonnes of annual capacity. Hinterland links run by road across Pará and by barge on the Amazon and Pará rivers; forwarders moving containerised freight into northern Brazil should weigh Itaqui at São Luís or the terminals around Belém.
