Roughly 70 percent of cargo activity at Victoria, the principal port of Malaysia's Labuan island, is tied to oil and gas. Sitting off the west coast of Sabah, the port works as a supply base for offshore operations in the South China Sea and includes a crude oil terminal with an SBM at Tanjung Kiamsam. Its wharves handle general cargo, bulk, containers and petroleum products, and the island's Petronas plants add methanol to the export mix. Container throughput is modest — low tens of thousands of TEU a year — and mainly serves local supply rather than transhipment. As an island port, Labuan has no conventional road hinterland; links to mainland Sabah run via ferries and feeder vessels. For larger container services, Kota Kinabalu and Bintulu are the practical alternatives.
