Veraval works as a lighterage port: vessels anchor about 1.5 km offshore and are loaded and discharged through two breakwater-sheltered inner basins, with only three ships handled at a time. On India's Saurashtra coast in Gujarat, it ranks among the country's largest fishing harbours and a major seafood-export base serving Southeast Asia, the Gulf and Europe. Recorded imports include fertiliser, wheat, coke and wood pulp, while exports cover oil cake, fish, soda ash and cement. The harbour closes during the monsoon from mid-May to mid-September. There is no container-line service, so for boxes shippers route via the deep-water terminals at Pipavav (APM Terminals) and Mundra, with Porbandar a further break-bulk and fishing option along the coast.
