Shipbuilding and heavy industry set the character of Vene-Balti, a port on the Kopli peninsula in Tallinn. Its centrepiece is Tallinn Shipyard, part of BLRT Grupp, which repairs, maintains and converts almost every vessel type, including reefer ships, Ro-Ros, passenger vessels and chemical and LPG tankers. Around the yard, several industrial firms operate within the port, among them BLRT Transiit for loading and discharging bulk and general cargo and Marketex Offshore Constructions for complex steel structures. The port stays open year-round and covers a water area of roughly 168 hectares. Its focus therefore lies in ship repair and industrial handling rather than containerised liner trade. Road and rail tie the site into greater Tallinn, while container and ferry traffic is best routed through the Port of Tallinn, notably Muuga.
