For decades Veitsiluoto near Kemi ranked among Finland's major paper sites, but its profile has narrowed sharply. Stora Enso permanently closed paper production here in 2021, ending an output of around 790,000 tonnes a year on the Gulf of Bothnia. The adjacent sawmill continues under Stora Enso's wood products arm, so the port now mainly moves sawn timber and forest-based goods rather than large paper volumes. Long managed by Kemi Shipping, the harbour's operations are increasingly being folded into the neighbouring Port of Kemi. Road and rail link the site to the northern Finnish hinterland. For container and liner services, the deep-water Ajos harbour at Kemi is the natural alternative, alongside Oulu.
