Where Bulgaria's containers go to sea, they mostly pass through Varna (BG VAR): the country's largest port handled about 285,000 TEU and 15.8 million tonnes in 2024, up 4.2%. The port splits into Varna West, the container hub run by terminal operator Transped EOOD with roughly 198,000 TEU in 2024, and Varna East, state-managed by BMF Ports Infrastructure for dry bulk, project cargo and ro-ro. Both terminals sit inland on Lake Varna and Lake Beloslav, reached through a canal from the Black Sea. For very large container vessels or transshipment, shippers turn to the much larger Romanian port of Constanța, while Burgas offers an additional Bulgarian option for bulk.
