Timber dominates the trade of Vanimo, the provincial capital of Sandaun in north-western Papua New Guinea. Sawmills and the area's largest employer, Vanimo Forest Products, ship round logs and timber products overseas from one of the few stretches of this coast offering anchorage for ocean-going vessels. Run by the state-owned PNG Ports Corporation, the harbour also handles general cargo, containers and breakbulk, though with basic equipment such as forklifts and mobile cranes. Approach depths suit mid-sized ships, but the cargo pier itself is shallow at about five metres. With little continuous road or rail link to the interior, the port mainly serves the surrounding coastal region. For substantial container or project volumes, Wewak and especially Lae are the stronger alternatives.
