Where most large ports count containers, Tallinn's Old City Harbour counts people – over 10 million passengers in peak years make Vanasadam one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe. Terminals A and D serve the ferry lines to Helsinki and Stockholm, operated by carriers such as Tallink, Eckerö and Viking Line. The harbour's traditional cargo role has been moved out of the city centre, so today Vanasadam handles almost only ro-ro freight that travels on the passenger ferries, meaning accompanied trailers and trucks. Containers, dry bulk and tanker cargo are not handled here. Forwarders shipping seafreight to Estonia use nearby Muuga, about 17 km east, the country's largest cargo port with container, oil and bulk terminals, or alternatively Paldiski. Vanasadam itself remains the gateway for passengers and rolling freight in accompanied traffic.
