Operating since 1908, the Vallvik mill has long shipped its output through its own quay on Sweden's Gulf of Bothnia coast. The port is owned and run by Rottneros, whose adjacent plant produces long-fibre chemical sulphate pulp, including specialised E-pulp and filter pulp. Most traffic consists of these pulp grades bound for Europe, North America and Asia, often carried on self-loading and self-discharging vessels; one hybrid ship now serves the route to cut emissions. Channel and berth depths of roughly 7 to 9 metres accommodate mid-sized bulk and breakbulk tonnage, but the quay is not set up for liner container services. Road and rail in the Söderhamn area provide hinterland access. Container shipments normally move via Gävle, leaving Vallvik to its role as a pulp-industry works port.
