A record 5.66 million TEU passed through Valencia (ES VLC) in 2025, up about 3.4 percent, keeping it Spain's largest container port and one of the busiest in the western Mediterranean. Sheltered behind breakwaters on the country's east coast, it runs three container terminals — Noatum (COSCO group), MSC's Malaccamax-equipped facility and the former APM Terminals — handling laden and empty boxes, reefers, breakbulk and vehicles, with major ship-repair capacity alongside. In September 2024 Valenciaport awarded a 50-year concession for the new Terminal Norte to Terminal Investment Limited (TiL), MSC's terminal arm; the design covers 137 hectares, 1,970 metres of quay and about 5 million TEU of added capacity. Construction was tendered at roughly 656 million euros, but reports in mid-2026 indicate the works are running behind their contractual milestones, so shippers should not plan firm volumes around an early opening. Rail links carry containers inland to Madrid, some 350 kilometres away, and to Aragón, supported by the ZAL logistics estate for warehousing and distribution. Customs follows EU rules, administered by Spain's Agencia Tributaria, with union transit and AEO status in routine use. China and the United States rank among the port's leading trade partners. Barcelona serves the north-east, while Algeciras and Tanger Med remain the reference options for pure transshipment.
