Crude oil, and nothing else, moves across the Valdez Marine Terminal — the loading point for Alaska North Slope crude since the Trans-Alaska Pipeline opened in 1977. Spread over roughly 1,000 acres on the south shore of Port Valdez, it forms the southern terminus of the some 800-mile line from Prudhoe Bay and operates two loading berths alongside thirteen storage tanks holding about 6.6 million barrels of working inventory. Alyeska Pipeline Service Company runs the facility but does not own the tankers, which are provided by the oil shippers. There is no container, general-cargo or roll-on/roll-off capability here; the terminal is purely a crude-export installation. Supertankers sail the deep, ice-free Valdez Arm year-round, historically carrying a sizeable share of US crude supply. Containerised or mixed cargo should be routed instead through the city Port of Valdez or Anchorage.
