Solvay owns and runs the port of Vada, a private works terminal on the Ligurian Sea serving the company's soda-ash complex at Rosignano in Tuscany. The roughly 1,720-metre Solvada jetty, in service since 1979, handles the plant's chemical output — sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride — together with raw materials such as salt and limestone. This is an industrial terminal, not a public multipurpose port: access is restricted to works traffic and pleasure craft are barred. Container lines, general breakbulk and routine customs clearance are not offered here. Shippers needing those services use nearby Livorno, Tuscany's large multipurpose and container port with rail and motorway connections. For captive chemical and bulk movements, however, Vada remains the specialised gateway on this stretch of coast.
