Each austral summer, expedition ships line the quays of Ushuaia before heading south — most of the world's Antarctic cruises depart from this Tierra del Fuego port between October and March. Beyond passenger traffic, the small natural harbour on the Beagle Channel handles genuine freight: breakbulk, dry bulk and containerised supplies for the region and for Tierra del Fuego's customs-privileged industry, including electronics assembly.
