Two of Japan's only brick dry docks sit at Uraga, completed in 1899 and now protected industrial-heritage sites — a clue to what this place at the entrance to Tokyo Bay is really about. Uraga Ko built more than 1,000 vessels under the Uraga Dock Company before its historic dock closed in 2003, and ship repair rather than cargo defines its maritime role today, continued at the nearby Sumitomo Heavy Industries yards in Yokosuka and Oppama. For freight forwarders the practical point is direct: Uraga operates no container or general-cargo terminal and handles no scheduled commercial traffic. Customs clearance, boxes, reefer and breakbulk for the Greater Tokyo area run through Yokohama, Tokyo and Kawasaki instead. Treat Uraga as a repair and heritage location, not a loading port.
