Once the busy rail-ferry link between Honshu and Shikoku, Uno (Uno-kō) saw its freight and ferry traffic fall sharply after the Great Seto Bridge opened in 1988. Today the port, at Tamano in Okayama Prefecture on the Seto Inland Sea, functions mainly as a passenger and vehicle ferry terminal serving the art islands of Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima. Its industrial weight comes from the Tamano shipyard operated by the Mitsui E&S group, one of Japan's larger yards, which explains the available ship repair, dry dock and roughly 11-metre quay depth. General breakbulk and container handling, by contrast, play only a minor role here. For liner cargo and boxes, forwarders rely on the nearby ports of Mizushima (Kurashiki) and Kobe. Uno is therefore best understood as a ferry and shipbuilding location rather than a commercial cargo gateway.
