Where many Baltic ports lean on either ferries or bulk, Umeå Hamn combines a busy RoRo ferry link with a solid forest-products trade. Roughly half of its 2.6 million tonnes of annual throughput is forest products such as kraftliner and timber, much of it from the nearby SCA Obbola mill. The working berths sit at Holmsund on the southern edge of Österfjärden, so the port is sometimes called the Port of Holmsund. Alongside forest goods it handles bulk, oil through the Stormskär and Obbola terminals, and containers. Across the Kvarken strait, Wasaline runs about twelve weekly RoRo sailings to Vaasa in Finland aboard the Aurora Botnia – a short Gulf of Bothnia crossing and, being EU-to-EU, without third-country customs. Road and rail carry cargo onward into the northern Swedish interior, while Sundsvall to the south or Luleå to the north cover volumes Umeå cannot.
