For the province of Aceh, Ulee Lheue is the everyday link between the capital Banda Aceh and the island of Sabang (Pulau Weh) across the approaches to the Strait of Malacca. Operated by ASDP, the port runs fast passenger craft of about 45 minutes and larger roll-on/roll-off ferries of roughly two hours, carrying passengers, vehicles and the day-to-day supplies that keep Sabang stocked. It is a ferry jetty rebuilt after the 2004 tsunami, not a container, customs or breakbulk facility. Containerised cargo and international trade for Aceh move instead through Malahayati (Krueng Raya) near Banda Aceh and the major port of Belawan at Medan.
