Coal, limestone, cement, chemicals and petroleum coke define the cargo mix at Ube Ko, an industrial port at the western end of Japan's Seto Inland Sea. Set in Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, it grew up around the cement and chemical works of Ube Industries, now Mitsubishi UBE Cement (formed in April 2022). The Okiyama area holds a company quay backed by one of the largest coal storage yards in Japan, while the Shibanaka area offers public berths. The adjacent Ube Coal Center acts as a relay station, holding coal, petcoke and biomass for distribution across western Japan, with imported coal drawn partly from Australia and Indonesia. With roughly 400 vessel calls a year, the port is built around bulk rather than scheduled container lines. Forwarders moving boxes are better served by Kitakyushu (Moji), Shimonoseki or Hakata nearby.
