Mining giant Vale built Tubarao (BR TUB) in 1966 to ship iron ore from the Iron Quadrangle of Minas Gerais, and the terminal near Vitória remains one of the world's largest ore-loading ports. It exported about 68 million tonnes of iron ore in 2024, loaded at peak rates near 16,000 tonnes per hour. Pier depths exceeding 21 metres let Tubarao handle Capesize and Valemax bulk carriers that smaller Brazilian ports cannot accommodate. Cargo reaches the quays by the dedicated Vitória-Minas railway, which links the port directly to the iron mines inland. For freight forwarders the key point is that Tubarao is a pure bulk and pellet facility with no container or general-cargo handling. Containerised, reefer and breakbulk shipments are routed instead through neighbouring Vitória (Codesa) or through Santos further south.
