Just 19 kilometres away, the new Vizhinjam deep-water terminal handled some 1.57 million TEU in its first year, a scale the open roadstead of Trivandrum (IN TRV) on the Laccadive Sea cannot approach. The Trivandrum anchorage has no container terminals or deep-water quays of its own and carries only marginal commercial cargo, suited at most to lighterage in calm conditions. For real container moves, India's first transshipment port at Vizhinjam, with around 24 metres of natural depth, is the obvious gateway, backed by the established multipurpose port of Cochin (Kochi). Forwarders should book against those ports rather than the IN TRV roadstead.
