The Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Lanka IOC, Tokyo Cement and Prima all operate dedicated facilities at Trincomalee, a natural deep-water harbour on Sri Lanka's north-eastern coast with depths exceeding 20 m. Rather than a container terminal, it is a multipurpose port: Tokyo Cement's cement berth, Lanka IOC's oil facility with the SLPA oil pier, Prima's grain and flour terminal and the Ashroff jetty for general cargo and dry bulk, plus a separate jetty for coal, gypsum and cement. Hinterland links run by road and rail into eastern and northern Sri Lanka. For containerised shipments, Colombo remains the country's principal deep-sea gateway, while Trincomalee's strengths lie in liquids, cement and dry-bulk handling.
